Just another feeble attempt by the UN to try and undermine the US. The UN wants to seize control of the internet from the US. Oh, they give noble reasons as for their cause, but it's all poppycock. They're really more interested in the taxing potential the internet offers. If they had this kind of funding, they wouldn't need to rely so heavily on the US for funding (or support). Here is an article that pretty much sums it all up:

But according to all the articles I've read, the President and Congress has adamantly refused stating control of the internet will remain in US hands (as it should). So at least while President Bush is in office, we don't have to worry yet. Now when he leaves, the possibility is there. Foreign countries have issued concerns about the US' credibility in the role it has in the internet, stating they're afraid of being left out or security reasons. Hah, many of these countries support terrorism, so they're probably referring to the government's ability to filter through their correspondence to hamper their operations. If the UN takes control, we would lose this ability. Also, these foreign countries like China would love to be able to shut down any web site that they don't approve of...not just in their country, but globally. That's very possible if the UN takes control. The idea of levying taxes on the internet is scary as well. The entire reason it thrives is because it is a free resource, for the most part. The only cost most users have is their access. After that, you can find just about any service you want for free. The internet would die within five years (or maybe even sooner) if it was taxed (shivers). It's true that Congress has entertained the idea themselves, but thankfully, they always table it for another ten years or so. I think the next time it comes before Congress is some time between 2008-2010. I wish they would just pass a bill/resolution/law (whatever they want to call it) that would prevent Congress from ever taxing the internet in any way, shape, or form (placing controls as well). As for foreigners scoffing at the US' concerns of security, they mean national security. Many people may not realize it, but the military is closely tied together with the internet (should be no surprise since they invinted it). The military networks would become vulnerable if the UN took control. I mean, that is why the internet was created...for military purposes. They were just gracious enough to allow the private and business sectors to join in, and now they want them to give up their prized project?!? If you logically reason it all out with the facts, it should be painfully obvious that things should remain just as they are concerning the internet (if it ain't broke, don't fix it)!
